Currently, only 1.5% of patients receive treatment within the critical time window due to reliance on in-hospital imaging. About the Role

The MR Hardware Physicist provides the specialist physics expertise required for the design, prototyping, and characterisation of Axana's core MR hardware systems, including magnet arrays, RF coils, and gradient coils. This critical role bridges the gap between theoretical electromagnetic simulation and hands-on hardware implementation. You will work at the intersection of physics and engineering to ensure Axana's hardware platform delivers the performance required for high-quality point-of-care clinical imaging, driving the development from initial concept through to verified prototype units.

Key Responsibilities

Working in partnership with relevant departments, you will:

MR System Characterisation

  • Characterise Axana's magnetic and RF field performance: B0 homogeneity, B1 field mapping, gradient linearity, and noise floor

  • Develop physical models linking hardware parameters to image quality metrics

  • Design and execute phantom studies to characterise and benchmark system performance against specifications

 

Signal Optimisation & Pulse Sequence Input

  • Contribute to pulse sequence development and optimisation, providing physics-level input on acquisition strategy

  • Analyse SNR, CNR, and artefact characteristics; identify root causes of image quality limitations

  • Collaborate with Data Science teams on signal acquisition and reconstruction physics

 

Field Safety & Compliance

  • Provide physics-level analysis of RF power deposition and SAR estimation relevant to patient safety

  • Support RF electromagnetic compliance activities and regulatory submissions requiring physics justification

  • Advise on patient RF and magnetic field exposure considerations for the clinical study protocol

 

Clinical Measurement & Evidence Generation

  • Participate in clinical feasibility study activities from a physics standpoint: measurement protocols, QC procedures, and site-level performance validation

  • Contribute to analysis and interpretation of clinical scan data from a physics perspective

  • Produce written physics analyses and reports suitable for clinical and regulatory audiences

 

Research & Literature Connection

  • Identify published work relevant to Wellumio's technical claims and performance benchmarks

  • Contribute to publications and conference presentations as appropriate

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD or Master’s in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a strong focus on MR hardware design, electromagnetics, or scientific instrumentation

  • Proven track record of hands-on laboratory experience building prototypes and complex electromagnetic hardware

  • Research or industry experience with MRI hardware characterisation, coil systems, or novel/portable MRI platforms preferred

  • Experience in an academic, research institute, or medical device context

 

Technical Capabilities

  • Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation (e.g., HFSS, CST, COMSOL) and hardware-software automation (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW)

  • MRI simulation tools: Bloch simulation, EM simulation for RF field characterisation

  • Expertise in MR hardware: magnet design, RF coil design or gradient coil optimisation

  • Experimental physics: laboratory measurement design, uncertainty analysis, and data interpretation

  • Familiarity with medical imaging standards and clinical measurement requirements

  • Clinical study measurement protocols reflect best-practice physics-level QC

  • At least one physics-related publication or conference contribution is in preparation or submitted
