About Wellumio

Wellumio is a venture-backed medical device company on a mission to create universal access to diagnostic imaging.

Magnetic resonance is the gold standard modality in medical imaging due to its exceptional soft tissue contrast. However, its accessibility is limited by high costs and the need to transport patients to scanners. At Wellumio, we are driven by a simple yet transformative idea: instead of bringing patients to the scanner, we bring the scanner to the patients, wherever it is needed.

By providing point-of-care imaging, Wellumio enables healthcare professionals to deliver earlier diagnoses, faster treatments, and better outcomes. Our second-generation scanner, Axana, is 99% lighter than conventional MRI systems, making it the most portable head magnetic resonance imaging system in the global brain and neuroimaging market.

The company's first target application is acute stroke, a leading cause of human mortality and disability. Currently, only 1.5% of patients receive treatment within the critical time window due to reliance on in-hospital imaging. Wellumio's point-of-care solution addresses this, making effective stroke treatment accessible wherever patients are.

With stroke projected to cause 7.5 million deaths and cost $1 trillion annually by 2030, there is an urgent need for cost-effective technologies that can streamline care pathways for stroke and other neurological conditions where time is critical.

Why should you be part of Wellumio's success story?

  • To work with a talented and passionate team dedicated to positively impacting the medical device industry.

  • To grow your skills and knowledge through ongoing training and development opportunities.

  • To work in a dynamic environment that rewards creativity, innovation, hard work, and continuous improvement.

At Wellumio we're challenging dominant models of clinical service delivery by fusing technology, design innovation, medical expertise, and systems-level thinking to create imaging solutions that put the needs of patients first.

About the Role

The Senior Cloud Developer and DevOps Engineer will build and own Wellumio's cloud infrastructure and backend platform — the foundation on which Axana's clinical data flows, is stored, analysed, and accessed securely across New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. This is a senior, hands-on role spanning cloud architecture, infrastructure-as-code, DevOps practice, and backend service development for a health data platform operating under multiple regulatory privacy frameworks.

What Success Looks Like
  • Cloud platform is operational, compliant, and supporting clinical data collection across all trial sites

  • All infrastructure is defined as code — no manual configurations or undocumented snowflakes

  • CI/CD pipelines in place for all production software components

  • Privacy and security controls pass internal audit and are documented for regulatory review

  • Cloud costs are monitored, understood, and within approved budget parameters

Soft Skills Requirements
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Good communication and collaboration skills

  • Willingness to learn and continuously develop technical expertise

  • Professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail

Go
  • 7+ years of cloud engineering with senior-level ownership of AWS (or Azure/GCP) infrastructure

  • Demonstrable DevOps experience: CI/CD pipeline ownership, infrastructure-as-code, and production monitoring

  • Experience building or operating platforms for regulated or health data preferred

  • Strong security and compliance background for health or financial data environments

Technical Capabilities

  • AWS: VPC, EC2, ECS/EKS, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, and IAM at senior depth

  • Infrastructure-as-code: Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation

  • CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins

  • Container orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes

  • Backend development: Python or Node.js for API and pipeline work

  • Security tooling: GuardDuty, Security Hub, or equivalent

Skills & Behaviours

  • Builds for reliability: designs systems that degrade gracefully and recover fast

  • Owns the platform end-to-end — does not hand off and walk away

  • Privacy and security are instincts, not afterthoughts

  • Communicates infrastructure decisions and trade-offs clearly to non-infrastructure engineers

Key Responsibilities

Working in partnership with relevant departments, you will:

Cloud Architecture & Infrastructure

  • Design and implement Wellumio's cloud infrastructure (AWS primary): multi-AZ, multi-region architecture serving NZ, AU, and US clinical data requirements

  • Define and implement infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation) — no manual configurations

  • Architect the data storage and access layer for clinical study data: secure, auditable, and compliant with applicable privacy laws

DevOps & CI/CD

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for all software components: device software, backend services, and data pipelines

  • Implement automated testing, deployment, and rollback mechanisms

  • Monitor system reliability, performance, and cost; implement alerts, runbooks, and SLAs for operational issues

Security & Compliance

  • Implement security controls for a health data platform: encryption at rest and in transit, access management, audit logging, and vulnerability scanning

  • Ensure the platform meets NZ Privacy Act, AU APP, and HIPAA requirements as applicable

  • Own IT security posture for cloud environments: MFA enforcement, IAM policy design, and DLP tooling

Backend Service Development

  • Develop backend API services and data pipeline components alongside the software team

  • Implement data ingestion, transformation, and export services for clinical study data

  • Build and maintain observability stack: logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting

Regulatory & Audit Readiness

  • Ensure cloud infrastructure is documented and auditable: architecture diagrams, change logs, and access records

  • Contribute software risk management inputs relevant to the cloud platform layer

  • Maintain data residency compliance for multi-jurisdiction clinical trial data
