The company's first target application is acute stroke, a leading cause of human mortality and disability. Currently, only 1.5% of patients receive treatment within the critical time window due to reliance on in-hospital imaging. Wellumio's point-of-care solution addresses this, making effective stroke treatment accessible wherever patients are.

About the Role

The Software Lead owns Wellumio's software engineering function — providing technical leadership, architecture direction, and hands-on delivery across the Axana software platform. This is a senior individual contributor and team leadership role, accountable for how software is built, the standards the team operates to, and for delivery against the clinical and product roadmap. You will be the most senior software voice in the company, working directly with the CEO, CTO, Data Science, and Clinical teams to define the architecture that will carry Axana from clinical study to commercial product.

  • Software architecture is documented, understood by the team, and guides all development decisions

  • Clinical study software is stable and supporting data collection across all trial sites

  • Software team operates with appropriate autonomy and is growing in capability

  • IEC 62304 compliance plan is defined and partially executed — the path to product is clear

  • Software is positioned for commercial product evolution without requiring a full rewrite

  •  10+ years of software engineering with at least 3 years in a technical lead or architect role

  • Experience in a regulated or mission-critical software environment: medical devices, aerospace, or equivalent

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a small engineering team and scale software quality practices

  • IEC 62304 familiarity or medical device software experience strongly preferred

 

Technical Capabilities

  • Architecture patterns: microservices, event-driven systems, embedded/cloud hybrid architectures

  • Cloud platforms (AWS or Azure), containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code basics

  • •Python and/or C/C++ proficiency; full-stack capability preferred

  • DevOps: CI/CD pipeline design, ownership, and operational monitoring

  • Data: relational and time-series databases, pipeline design, and data governance

Key Responsibilities

Working in partnership with relevant departments, you will:

Software Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Define and own the software architecture for Axana: embedded device software, cloud backend, data pipeline, and clinical user interface

  • Make architectural decisions appropriate to the current stage while preserving the ability to evolve to commercial product standards

  • Establish coding standards, review practices, and technical documentation expectations across the software team

 

Hands-On Delivery & Team Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a growing team of software engineers, setting direction and removing blockers

  • Contribute directly to high-value and high-complexity software development — this is not a purely management role

  •  Own the software delivery roadmap: scope, sequence, and trade-offs communicated clearly to leadership

 

Regulated Software Planning

  • Plan the transition from clinical study software to IEC 62304-compliant product software

  • Define the software risk file, hazard classification, and verification strategy

  • Work with Quality to ensure software development practices are audit-ready as the QMS matures

 

Clinical Deployment & Operational Reliability

  • Ensure software is deployable and operable at clinical trial sites — reliable, simple, and supportable remotely

  • Define operational procedures for software updates, data backup, and system recovery at sites

  • Lead resolution of software issues arising during active clinical study use

 

Data & Cloud Strategy

  • Own the software architecture for clinical data flows: acquisition, storage, de-identification, and structured export

  • Define cloud backend architecture in collaboration with the Cloud Dev & DevOps Engineer

  • Ensure privacy, security, and compliance requirements are designed in from day one

 

Stakeholder Communication

  • Translate software status and risks into clear, actionable updates for CEO, CTO, board, and investors

  • Participate in investor due diligence and technical reviews as the software domain expert

  • Represent software engineering in product and clinical roadmap discussions
